Report Details
sun 27/09/2026 Abbot's Wood, E,Sx. After checking for Brown Hairstreak eggs on Aug.31st and finding none, another visit was due. After finding a Pale Tussock Moth larva making it's way across the track, and searching blackthorns along the track side, at 11.13am found 1x BH egg on a single stemmed blackthorn not far from three eggs that were found last year. Checked Milton Hyde but no BH eggs found, last year counted 19x. After checking more blackthorns along the way, I thought I'd just check out a recently felled area where I had noticed some blackthorn new growth, with not much searching found my second BH egg at 1.23pm. Butterflies seen were 2x Red Admirals, 2x Wall, 9x Common Blues, 1x Small Copper, 2x Painted Ladies, 1x Brimstone (m), but the most numerous was the Clouded Yellows at Milton Hyde with a total of 19x including four helice, another helice was seen elsewhere in the wood. This was all between 10.20an and 1.55pm.

There is no doubt that both Brown Hairstreak and Wall Brown have expanded their range, in Sussex, in the past 2-3 years. They are firmly established in Abbot's Wood, but in small numbers, and require a fair amount of effort to locate them. Excellent work, Peter. The "helice sightings" have been very interesting this year. It has been an astonishing year for Clouded Yellows, and time and time again, members have been mentioning the helice form of the females. I would suggest more than any year, that I can recall.   Martin K
