It was another summery day for a meander from North Lancing to North Worthing via Steep Down. In Sompting I spied a Queen of Spain Fritillary whilst trying to count the many Clouded Yellow by scanning the flowery meadow back and forth with my trusty binoculars. It was sadly a rather brief encounter as it must have hopped over the hedge. Despite staying forty minutes I could not relocate it. It looked very fresh. It was in the field with a footpath parallel to the A27 south of Sompting Abbot’s School grounds. A crowning glory indeed, but also on the menu were 52 Clouded Yellow (3 helice), 18 Wall, 17 Common Blue, 5 Red Admiral, 4 Speckled Wood, 4 Small Copper, Painted Lady, Small Heath, Small White (not counted), Humming-bird Hawk-moth.
