sun 20/09/2026 FRISTON FOREST, E,Sx. After finding 56x Brown Hairstreak egg in Friston Forest last year, then losing 48x to the mower, then finding 10x more in March. Total 18x left? This year on 26th July couldn't find any (probably to early). so today had another search and found 21x BH eggs including one that had been munched, the first one found at 10.29an in Litlington Road TV 518 999, the last found at 2.23pm in The Lane TV 522 999. in-between searched the mown areas and found new blackthorn growth and finding BH eggs on some of these, this wasn't a thorough search but just to see if last year was a one off for BH in Friston, and after the mowing did any survive, after todays search all is looking well. Fantastic! On one sucker stem found 5x BH eggs. Then when I thought it couldn't get any better, while walking towards Forge Cottage, Westdene and saying to Sarah "I've yet to see an adult Brown Hairstreak" a butterfly was noticed flitting about and briefly settling in the front garden, I couldn't believe it, a female BH, camera out and one or two photos taken and she was gone, this is only my second BH seen in East Sussex. Unbelievable! Other butterflies seen: 1x Meadow Brown, 8x Speckled Wood, 5x Red Admirals, 8x Clouded Yellows including one helice, 4x Wall (3m 1f) 1x Large White, 1x Common Blue (m) and 1x Small White.
