A couple of days ago Lisa and I had a walk around the Comp and Greenway and saw 27 Wall Brown, so today with it looking as though the 3rd brood is probably around peak we headed out on my 4 mile circuit to do the annual 3rd brood count. Despite the weather being a little unhelpful for much of the time I was pleased to get to 64 on the circuit. Lisa saw a further 3 above the scarp as I was looking along the top of the scarp where females were egg laying. I haven't been doing a 3rd brood count regularly until 5 years ago, but it was pleasing to get to that figure, my 2nd best 3rd brood count. If the wind had not picked up it could have been the best perhaps.
We also saw a fresh Clouded Yellow that looked interesting. Having just returned from Transylvania where there were high numbers of Pale Clouded Yellow (Colias hyale) we both got excited when a Clouded Yellow that was quite pale, but not as pale as most helice are, flew past. It looked just like what we were watching last week. Fortunately I managed to climb up the slope and get a few shots, but unfortunately, it was proved to be just a darker than normal helice Clouded Yellow.
